The adidas Originals NMD_R2 was first unveiled in June 2016 at Pitti Uomo, during White Mountaineering‘s collaborative runway presentation with adidas. At the time, only select glimpses of the new sneaker made their way online, until August when another leak surfaced, showing a first look at the inaugural “Utility Black” colorway.

Finally in November, adidas confirmed the “Utility Black” colorway in addition to a “Cargo” version, which would comprise the very first release of the NMD_R2. The latest is that the NMD_R2 will soon be released in two new colorways, including the “Blue/Turquoise/Red ” and “Black/Red” updates of the model.

For what is sure to be one of the most-hyped sneakers of the coming year, read below for adidas NMD_R2 release date, price, colorways, design, plus new on-foot images.

adidas NMD_R2 Release Date

adidas.com released the first two NMD colorways — “Utility Black” and “Cargo” — on December 3, individually priced at $170, while at the time of publishing (Monday, December 5, 11:10AM EST), select sizes were still available online. While future releases are expected to be stocked at sneaker boutiques and retailers, the first drop was strategically limited to the brand’s own e-commerce.

adidas has also confirmed release details of the black and white versions of the NMD_R2, with the drop expected to happen in April 2017 and a global release soon after that. Check out images of these colorways below.

We’ll share more NMD_R2 release date details here as they emerge.

adidas NMD_R2 Design

The R2 boasts slight twists on its predecessor the NMD_R1, most notably a Boost midsole that features debossed stripe details in place of EVA plugs. The updated sneaker also boasts a waxed-suede heel-patch and branded tab on the heel.

While the adidas NMD_R2 design shares some DNA with its predecessor, the NMD_R1, adidas has evolved this popular silhouette’s design even further. The R1’s prominent, lego-like midsole blocks are replaced with the R2’s single, ergonomically-shaped plug on the shoe’s instep, a slight redesign that leaves the shoe’s silhouette looking even more sleek.

In the image above, you can see the NMD_R2’s debossed Boost midsole and linear pattern on the upper, crafted from adidas’s signature Primeknit material.

adidas NMD_R2 Colorways

As mentioned, aside from “Utility Black” and “Cargo” variants, additional “White/Red” and “White/Black/Red” colorways have also been presented with a rumored release date of April 2017. It’s still early days for the adidas NMD_R2, so we’ll update you as more colorways are announced, what the release date and price will be for each model, and where you can buy them.

Earlier this month, adidas revealed more information regarding its collaboration with Japanese clothing brand White Mountaineering (image below). The collection, which featured new models of the NMD Trial, EQT Support, and a brand new sleek colorway of the NMD_R2, dropped in March. Check out the image below, and click here for more pictures.

In addition, the NMD_R2 will be getting a double colorway update, with “Blue/Turquoise/Red ” and “Black/Red” iterations of the model.
