Des started kayaking in the mid-nineties, and enjoyed the freedom and adventure of the sport. Growing up in Wiltshire he would spend many evenings and weekends exploring a local river developing his skills. Surf kayaking introduced him to paddling in a dynamic environment, the inevitable capsizes proved a good foundation for whitewater rivers where he enjoys the challenge of running and playing on the rapids. This led back to the sea where he discovered rapids could be found on tide races around the coast and an interest in the power of the tide led to becoming a regular surfer on the Severn Bore. Des began instructing kayaking in the late nineties, he has led expeditions, coached technical skills and taught new instructors.
